Slack's 2023 price increase was the largest in its history. Pro plan went from $6.67 to $7.25/user/month (about 9%), and Business+ went from $12.50 to $12.50 (held flat). But Slack AI — which adds meeting summaries, search intelligence, and workflow automation — adds $7.25/seat on top of your existing plan. For a 50-seat team already on Business+, Slack AI brings your bill from $625/month to $987/month before discounts. Annual billing saves ~15%.
Zoom's 2022 price restructure doubled per-license costs. The Pro plan went from $14.99 to $15.99/license/month. More significant: Zoom One plans now bundle phone + meetings + chat. A Business plan at $19.99/license includes Zoom Phone — useful if you're consolidating your comms stack. Zoom AI Companion is now included at no extra cost on paid plans (competitive response to Teams Premium).
Intercom's 2023 pricing overhaul is the biggest repricing story in customer messaging. The company moved from per-seat pricing to a seat + usage model and tripled effective prices for many mid-market customers. Essential plan starts at $39/seat/month. For teams with high conversation volume, the new pricing can easily reach $500–$2,000/month for what previously cost $200/month. Many customers migrated to Crisp, HubSpot Service Hub, or Zendesk in response.
Drift removed its freemium plan in 2023. Previously had a generous free tier. Now the entry point is $2,500/month (Premium), targeting enterprise-only buyers. This is one of the most aggressive freemium-to-enterprise pivots in recent SaaS history. Small and mid-market teams were effectively forced to migrate — creating a large customer acquisition opportunity for Crisp and Intercom alternatives.
Microsoft Teams remains the cost-effective baseline for enterprises already on M365. If your company uses Microsoft 365 Business Basic ($6/user/month), Teams is included at no extra cost. Teams Essentials at $4/user/month is the cheapest standalone video + chat option in this category. Teams Premium adds AI features (Copilot summaries, intelligent recap) at $10/user/month extra — expensive, but integrated with the broader Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
